Annoying calls get the attention of Texas lawmakers

Posted: Updated:

DENISON, Texas -- How many calls did you get today from a telemarketer?

It's downright annoying, and even more frustrating when those callers try to trick you with an area code that appears to be familiar.

Those disguised telemarketer calls are known as "spoofing," and they're driving lots of people crazy, but your best bet is to not answer a call from a number you don't recognize. If they really need you, they'll leave a message.

House Bill 1992 would make spoofing illegal in Texas. The legislation passed in the Texas House on Thursday.

State Rep. Ben Leman (R-District 13) said the bill should have no trouble passing the Senate.

"The law needed to be updated in order to add further protections," he explained. "Met with the attorney general's office and they were very clear that this bill does help them be able to prosecute spoofing activity more effectively."

The law will take effect in September if the Senate approves and Gov. Greg Abbott signs it.
