SHERMAN, Texas -- The City of Sherman is shelling out $20 million so motorists will have a smoother and safer ride.

More than half the total will go to the Texas Department of Transportation for expansion projects on FM 1417 and US 75.

"Elevate Highway 75 out of the flood plain; it will bring it up to interstate standards," said City Council member Shawn Teamann. "It will take care of a traffic buildup at Highway 75 and 82 by putting in U-turns in every direction."

Many entrance and exit ramps along US 75 in Sherman will be upgraded to remove sharp and dangerous turns.

The other $8 million is earmarked for expanding Travis Street from downtown to Sherman High School's future location.

And where will all this money be coming from?

all comes down to where the city will find this money and how it'll be paid off.

"It's on a payment plan over the course of 20 or 25 years, depending on what type of bonds we end up getting for those," Teamann said. "What we approved is the ability to get those bonds."

Construction on these projects is expected to begin by the end of this year.
