Living in Texoma means knowing what to do when a severe storm strikes.

If there is tornado activity in your community, get in a cellar, a safe room, or the most interior room of your home. Cover yourself with pillows or mattresses.

What if you're caught in a hail storm? The No. 1 rule is to get inside or find a sturdy shelter. Stay away from windows and skylights.

And if you're driving when severe weather approaches, stop. Pull over, away from trees or other areas which could generate flying debris.

And this is important: Do not seek shelter under an overpass; it's simply not a safe place to be due to the way wind accelerates through small spaces.

On May 3, 1999, one person died in a vehicle in Perry, Oklahoma, that was parked under an Interstate 35 overpass during a storm.
