GAINESVILLE, Texas -- The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military award, recognizing valor in action against an enemy force.

In 2001, Gainesville, Texas, became the only city in the country to named a Medal of Honor Host City. And this week, Texoma honors our heroes.

A motorcade procession that started at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was expected to be 10 miles long, with more than 500 vehicles taking part in the journey to Gainesville for a four-day celebration of Medal of Honor recipients.

Seventeen of those recipients will take part in events this year that begin Wednesday and continue through Saturday.

Highlights include a dinner on Thursday, a tree dedication and banquet on Friday, and the annual downtown parade on Saturday.
