SHERMAN, Texas -- The Texas Department of Transportation is working to help drivers stay safe.

The agency hosted two different events in Grayson County on Tuesday. The first, which runs all week, recognizes National Work Zone Awareness Week.  Orange cones were set up on the lawn of TxDOT's Sherman office on the southbound service road of US 75, just south of the FM 1417 intersection.

It's a reminder to motorists to slow down and pay attention in work zones.

"We want the people passing by to know that there are lots of work zones at any given time in Texas," said TxDOT spokesman Tim McAlavy. "Please slow down and obey work zone law."

At the other event, CarFit  TxDOT employees at the Texas Travel Information Center in Denison went over a 12-point checklist with drivers -- primarily 55 and older -- to make sure their car is as safe as possible for them.
