DENISON, Texas — For a police officer, wearing the badge is an honor.

But for rookie Denison Officer Brittany Hargrove, her badge — No. 222 —  is a legacy.

"I was told the week I graduated from the academy that, 'You're getting your dad's badge number,'" she said. "That's the badge number he started with."

Hargrove always looked up to her dad, Clayton Pyles, who served as a Denison officer for nearly 30 years. He's currently a part-time officer at Grayson College.

"You always want to grow up and be like your hero, and he is my hero, and I want to be like him," Hargrove said.

Now, she is serving beside him.

"The 'dad' side of me was concerned about her safety," Pyles said. "But she has a good head on her shoulders; she'll do fine."

Hargrove said law enforcement is simply in her blood.

"You don't really have words to describe it, other than it's what you're meant to do," she said.

But even the uniform can't hide a father's love. Pyles got emotional as his daughter received her badge.

"I just hope I carry it as well as he does," Hargrove said.
