Madill police dive team uses grant to buy boat

MADILL, Okla. -- With three lakes within the Madill city limits and the town's proximity to Lake Texoma, it made sense for the police department to start a dive team about a year ago.

One problem: The department didn't have a boat for dive team members to use.

"Going out on training missions, on different call-outs, it became very apparent that we needed a way to be able to transport our divers and our equipment," Madill police spokesman Donny Raley said.

There wasn't enough money in the city's budget to help the department purchase a vessel.

But the BNSF Railway offers grants to assist cities with critical needs. The police department applied, and its application was accepted.

"I hope it makes the community feel safer that we can respond quicker to emergencies that arise on our lakes and also on Lake Texoma," Raley said.

The boat isn't ready to take on missions just yet; it still needs some finishing touches including lights and equipment.

The dive team also needs to complete training with the boat before it can be taken out on the water. Police say it should be ready by the start of lake season.
