ARDMORE, Okla. -- The beautification project along Main Street is nearing completion, and Ardmore motorists can expect to see some changes, including reverse-angle parking.

It will require shoppers to back-in to their parking space. Assistant City Manager Kevin Boatright believes it will make driving much safer.

"When you back in and you park, you don't have to back out blindly as you do now," he explained. "You pull in forward and you back out, and you kind of take a chance 'cause you cannot see the incoming traffic."

Reverse-angle parking has always been part of the city's final plan for Main Street.

Before construction began, the city held a public meeting to get ideas about what changes were desired. After hearing about the benefits of reverse-angle parking, participants were all for it.

Still, there is expected to be confusion when the change is made, so the city has plans for a soft launch.

"Where people can come in and practice their back-in parking," Boatright said. "We'll have it blocked off so you don't have to worry about taking your time cause somebody is driving that direction."

The practice sessions will be scheduled on a weekend after construction is complete.
