DENISON, Texas -- Kafka is a German Shepherd mix. For more than 40 days, his home has been a cage at the Denison Animal Welfare Group.

If he's not adopted soon, D.A.W.G. will have to send him to another state.

"Right now we're spending a large amount of money transporting dogs over 2,000 miles away to be able to find homes, just because we don't have enough space to hold them," explained D.A.W.G's president Stephanie Phillips.

Animal advocates say a new facility for the shelter would help pets like Kafka remain in Grayson County,  while saving transportation expenses for the nonprofit group.

"Something our community needs is a real animal shelter," Phillips said.

On Monday night, the Denison City Council will vote on a plan to rezone a 5.8-acre property in the 2200 block of West Morton Street to accommodate a new D.A.W.G. facility.

"We're looking at 40 kennels and cat areas, volunteer areas, animal control areas [and] activity centers so we can do education," Phillips said. "This will really allow us to have the areas that we need for quarantine for sick animals, or for medical treatment for injured animals," Phillips said. "They'll have a resource that they helped build that they can be proud of in our city."

The City Council vote is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday. If the rezoning approves, Phillips said D.A.W.G. will begin the process of raising funds for the new facility.
