ARDMORE, Okla. -- After hearing comments and concerns from pet owners, the Ardmore Parks and Recreation Department has decided to divide its dog park.

One area will be set aside for larger dogs, the other for smaller best friends, with the hope of a better experience for all.

Ardmore's dog park has been divided in two parts for years, but they were never open at the same time. Officials would keep one side closed in an effort to keep the park looking nice.

"So that we can rotate and keep our dog park beautiful," explained Parks and Recreation director Teresa Ervin. "Gives us time to do repairs, also helps on the grass."

But after the department realized they could manage the maintenance of the park, it has decided to open both sides. The dogs will be divided by weight: One section is for dogs under 30 pounds, the other for canines that weigh more.

"Some people were a little concerned if they brought their little dogs and there was big dogs out there, but sometimes it's vice-versa, too," Ervin said. "Sometimes the little dogs are the ones that'll get after the big ones."

This change isn't the only one coming to the dog park. There's some new equipment on the way to give the dogs more ways to run around.

"You want to keep it updated; you want something new and fresh from time to time, just like a park or a pavilion," Ervin said.

The department plans to keep this divided park going as long as people enjoy it. The new equipment should be here before the end of April.

The dog park is located at Ardmore Regional Park at 2704 North Rockford Road.
