DENISON, Texas -- The stained glass windows that adorn St. Luke's Episcopal Church date back to the late 1800s, and Father Don Perschall recently learned that three of them were made by the prestigious Tiffany Studios in New York .

"It's very unusual for a church here in North Texas to possess something like this," Father Don said. "It carries with it a lot of responsibility ... they're irreplaceable, and that's why they're covered and cared for the way they are."

St. Luke's is the oldest Episcopal place of worship in Grayson County, and it's full of rich history. Each of the Tiffany windows was designed differently.

"This window here was dedicated to George Washington's nephew, who was a member of this church," Father Don explained. "They carry with them a character that the newer style of stained glass windows simply do not have."

He said that some people have driven to Denison from as far away as Houston and Oklahoma City to marvel at the intricate designs.

The windows require some intensive care to maintain; they're protected from the outside by a special coating. But they can still be appreciated in their original setting, unlike many original Tiffany windows that have found new homes in museums.

The other stained glass windows in the church at 427 Woodard Street were made in the same style as the Tiffany products.

The church welcomes visitors anytime for a tour.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the stained glass windows were made by Tiffany & Co., the jewelry firm. Tiffany Studios was a separate company established by a member of the same family.
