SHERMAN, Texas -- A pedestrian was killed Sunday evening when he was hit by a car along Vietnam Veterans Parkway in Sherman.

Sherman police said 34-year-old David Mondares was in the road when the driver of a silver Nissan sedan struck him.

Police spokesman Sgt. Brett Mullen said investigators have been unable to determine why Mondares was in the road.

"I would say for drivers to just be in the mindset to anticipate potential dangers," Mullen said. "Expect the unexpected."

State law requires pedestrians to walk on the left side of the road -- facing oncoming traffic -- if there is no sidewalk available.
