SHERMAN, Texas -- Sherman public schools is opening online registration early for their early childhood programs.

Sherman public schools plans to open online registration early this year for parent's hoping to qualify their children for their Pre-K, head start or early head start programs.

"Head start is a federally funded program," said the school district's communication director, Kimberly Simpson. " In order for us to make sure parents qualify their kids, we definitely have to have more time to process the information."

Simpson says the school district will begin taking applications for the 2019-2020 school year on March 18th.

To qualify, parents must complete the online registration, go through interviews with the school and then have their kids take a language test.

"The process is different than elementary," said Deloris Dowell, the principal of Fredrick Douglass Early Childhood Center. "There are so many steps that we have to go through to qualify them to get them ready for the school year."

Dowell says takes longer, but if children can qualify for the program they'll learn not only academics but also social skills to get them ready for elementary school.

"We know that every child learns differently." said the principal. " We're here to work with them to help them be the best that they can be."

Simpson says if you're not able to register online, they'll be at Washington Elementary on March 18th and 26th to take applications in person.
