DURANT, Okla. -- The Bryan County Fair Board is preparing for its first contested election in almost 20 years.

The fairgrounds is a special place for Rachel Rawls and her daughter Marilynn, a 4-H member.

"It really is a second home," Marilynn said. "I spend a lot of time here every single week, and I see a lot of people I really care about, and it's just one big happy family."

"For me personally it just gives us the opportunity to put together events that are so important for our youth," he mom added.

The fairgrounds have become Bryan County's hub for events from parties to rodeos, and now county leaders see it becoming even more.

Durant Chamber of Commerce director Janet Reed said this vote could be a positive development for the future of the fairgrounds.

"I think the expansion of the fairgrounds could definitely improve many things coming into the community," she said.

There are three contested Fair Board seats, and voting will take place at three different locations:

  • District 1: Bryan County Fairgrounds community building, 1901 9th Avenue, Durant
  • District 2: District 2 Barn, 5 West Main Street, Achille
  • District 3: District 3 Barn, 922 Roberts Street, Bokchito

Voters must cast their ballot in the district where they live. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

For Marilynn Rawls, this election could have a positive impact.

"Change is also a good thing, to promote each and all the clubs -- from 4-H to FFA," she said. "Whether you specialize in sheep, horses, sewing, I just want to see it grow and develop even more."
