OAKLAND, Okla. -- Although some of us don't have to think twice about keeping up with our hygiene, it can be a struggle for some senior citizens.

These are older Oklahomans who receive SNAP benefits every month, benefits that only cover food purchases.

"Those SNAP benefits don't cover basic hygiene items, and this is something that hugely effects our senior citizen population," said Gwen Wilson, whose organization -- Hope for Marshall County -- was inspired to offer help to these seniors. They are accepting donations of all kinds, including:

  • toilet paper
  • toothpaste
  • denture tablets
  • low-dose aspirin
  • soap
  • deodorant

Wilson said the need for these items is even more crucial in the winter months. With not a lot of money coming in from SNAP benefits and higher heating bills, personal care items can be relegated to the back burner.

"They're coming off of Christmas, a lot of them have trouble when they get sick," Wilson said. "Then there's the excessive expense of the medications they need to get over."

Taking donations isn't the only thing Hope for Marshall County has planned for seniors.

"They'll also be receiving a big surprise Valentine's basket," Wilson said. "Anyone that wants to help with those, we put things like lotions, Chapsticks, candies."

Do you have any items to donate? Drop them off at the Hope for Marshall County Food Pantry at  19111 Elizabeth Boulevard in Oakland, or at any of the many "blessing boxes" across the county. Call the organization at 580-677-0429 for more information.
