HOWE, Texas -- A nearly 50 year-old-baseball field is finally getting a fresh new look.

The City of Howe, its youth baseball program and several businesses donated $25,000 to bring Ferguson Park back to its original glory.

"It's needed a lot of repairs over the years," said Monte Walker, the city's economic development director. "It hasn't seen any maintenance in about 25 years."

Ferguson Park was developed as a baseball field after the land was donated to the city in 1971.

The diamond has been a place for the community to make memories ever since.

"I hit a ground ball through the outfield," said youth baseball player Hunter Hance. " I got a home run without them tagging me."

Walker also has a few memories of Ferguson Park.

"When they put the fence up in 1984, I was fortunate enough to hit the first home run," he recalled.

Walker said he hopes the facility will be one of the best in Texoma when construction is finished.

"We've got a wind screen around the outfield fence and green netting." he said. "We've also got the yellow poly cap on the outfield fence, and that goes a long way to make a field look good."

Updates to the dugouts, field play area and concession stands are also planned.

Walker said Ferguson Park should be ready for the 2019 season by March 15.
