LONE GROVE, Okla. -- Lone Grove Public Schools were closed Thursday and will remain closed Friday because of widespread flu and other illness.

Officials said about 300 children missed school on Wednesday, with several teachers coming to school sick due to a lack of substitutes.

The district is working to sanitize each classroom and hallway, and plans to resume classes on Monday morning.

The Centers for Disease Control says the flu is now considered to be "widespread" in Texas and Oklahoma.

According to the Oklahoma State Health Department, 21 people have died so far during the current flu season, with more than 500 individuals hospitalized.

In Texas, KXAS reported that Children's Medical Center Dallas listed more than 253 positive flu cases just last week.
