SHERMAN, Texas -- Three Sherman High School students are headed to a statewide culinary competition.

The school held its fifth annual Lone Star Chef contest on Wednesday. Five teams of three students prepared a dish that conforms to National School Lunch Program guidelines.

The teens only had 30 minutes to whip up the assigned recipe, but they started preparing for this competition last month.

"We give them a key ingredient list that they can order from, and then from there they kind of build their menu," explained Sherman Independent School District Director of School Nutrition Services John Spradley. "Then just this past week, they have been honing their skills and preparing the recipe in full."

The winning team was HBR, with Bailey Kuhn, Haley Klas and Robert Callejas. They'll compete at the state event in Houston next month.
