SHERMAN, Texas -- Austin College students competed in the second annual intercollegiate mock trials at the Grayson County Justice Center this weekend.

Fifteen teams from five different states were a part of this year's Kangaroo Brawl, hosted by Austin College.  Each competitor was assigned a fictional case to address, and had the chance to play both judge and jury.

"Each side has three attorneys and three witnesses," explained Ed Richardson, Director of Advocacy Programs at Austin College. "They're required to do direct examination, cross-examination, opening and closing statements... and then we've had a group of local lawyers and Austin College alumni with law degrees who've come in to play judges for us, and it is run like a real trial."

Richardson said Austin College placed third in the competition, their best result ever.

The next mock trial competition will be a regional event in Dallas on February 8.
