Online donors fund Murray County school lunches

Posted: Updated:

MURRAY COUNTY, Okla. -- For single-parent households or low-income families, kids may find themselves on a school's free or reduced-fee lunch program. But sometimes, other obstacles give their families a hard time paying the lunch bill.

"If a family struggles throughout the year, or they have medical bills or even government shutdown happens, people are going to struggle to pay rent, and this is just another bill," said Jennifer Mayo.

So she organized GoFundMe pages for the Davis and Sulphur school districts in an effort to make a dent in some of this lunch debt. Mayo said her effort was inspired by her grandfather.

"He was superintendent of the Davis Public Schools for 20 years, so he really taught me the value of supporting kids in our community," she said.

Mayo set the goal for Sulphur at $650 and the goal for Davis at $2,000. She was not surprised to see that the communities responded in a big way.

"When hard times come, they continue to uplift each other," Mayo said. "I just set the bar at like what the debt was, and they both were met within like three hours."

Helping families in school districts close to home isn't the only goal. Mayo said she hopes to provide something like this for Oklahoma City schools, but that could be a tougher challenge.

"The community of Murray County is really tight-knit, and I knew it would be funded quickly," she said. "In Oklahoma City, we'll just have to do a little bit more work than this GoFundMe."

While the two Murray County GoFundMe pages don't erase of all the lunch meal debt, they do knock out a huge chunk.
