DENISON, Texas -- Brandon Jeffery has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a 2017 fatal shooting outside a Denison bar.

In November, Jeffery pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge for killing Devin Owens in a vehicle parked outside the Tupelo Honey Bar and Grill on May 4, 2017.

Jeffery, 28, claimed he was trying to load his handgun when it accidentally discharged. He was sentenced on Thursday.

Assistant District Attorney Britton Brooks said the ordeal has been devastating for Owens' family.
