ARDMORE, Okla. -- A housing management company wants to make its properties safer for tenants.

L.W. Development is adding community safe rooms to multi-family projects currently under construction. With Oklahoma's unpredictable weather, these reinforced rooms will give residents a safe haven for when bad weather strikes.

"It provides peace of mind not just to -- you know, maybe the person that's at home -- but to the family member that's not at home that at least knows that, 'Hey, my kids can see it coming. They know they can go take shelter,'" said L.W. Development manager Lance Windel.

He said the safe rooms idea began with a push from the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency.

"We started doing that in single family homes, with putting a steel structure in the garage," Windel explained. "As we started to do some more multi-family work, we said, 'Hey, you know, let's look at doing this in also multi-family,' and 'How do we make that, how do we make that work?'"

The company plans to have the safe rooms completed within the next couple of months, and they will have an alternate purpose, too.

"It's gonna be a community room that folks can use for a lot of other, you know, activities," Windel said. "But on a bad day, it's going to be protection."
