PAULS VALLEY, Okla. -- The building that once housed Pauls Valley Regional Medical Center may soon again be providing health care services.

Southern Plains Medical Group has reached a non-binding agreement with the City of Pauls Valley to establish a new urgent care center in the building that had served as Garvin County's only hospital until it closed in October.

Both sides agree this is something that needs to happen.

"When a rural community suffers like Pauls Valley, that's really the core of our interest. That's our mission statement. That's our objective," said Southern Medical Group CEO Len Lacefield.

Officials say if it all goes according to plan, SPMG could be operating in Pauls Valley by February. City officials were unavailable Friday to discuss the proposal.

"Everything aside, how important is it to the People of Pauls Valley and leadership that health care is reinstated?" Lacefield asked. "In short, I quote: 'It's life and death.'"

SPMG currently operates clinics in Chickasha and Anadarko and has plans to expand to Maysville and the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
