DURANT, Okla. -- Traffic was flowing again Tuesday evening, more than 14 hours after three 18-wheelers were involved in a fatal accident at the intersection of U.S. 69/75 and Choctaw Road, near Choctaw Casino.

Durant police said the chain-reaction crash happened in a dense fog around 4 a.m. when the driver of a southbound big rig failed to yield for a red light and struck two other trucks.

"When it's foggy outside, drivers need to slow down and exercise caution as they approach Calera -- especially that area," said Bryan County EMS deputy director Nate Toews. "We just want to make sure everyone gets home for the holidays."

One driver was taken to Texoma Medical Center in Denison with life-threatening injuries; that person was expected to be transferred to a Dallas hospital for further treatment. A passenger in that truck died at the scene.

There appeared to be no other serious injuries.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said the southbound lanes of U.S. 69/75 traffic remained closed to traffic until after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
