LAKE TEXOMA -- Temperatures might be dropping, but that isn't stopping some anglers from getting out on the water.

Fishing guide David Escamilla says winter is the best time to cast your line.

"I've never been really good on land, but put me on the water and that's a different story," he said, because Lake Texoma is his "office."

"I feel like I'm at home," he said. "I've been on the water all my life. I've never done anything else but striper fish."

Escamilla (also known as "Little Dave") works for Sparky's Guide Service, and has been helping others find fish for more than 25 years.

"Any time the water is cooling down, you'll catch a lot more, bigger fish," he said.

And why are the fish bigger when it's colder? The answer lies under the surface.

"They'll be out here in the deep water feeding and really fattening up on all the shad that's available," explained Sparky's Guide Service owner Eddie Sparks.

Another perk of wintertime fishing: You won't have as much competition. Fewer boats means more fish.

Lake Texoma is one of the top striper fishing lakes in the county, with people coming from all over to take the bait. Whether you're an avid angler or first-timer like Skip Weir, you're bound to find success.

"I didn't think it would be that easy, but it is its pretty easy," Weir said. "We caught three fish pretty quick!"

"Any time I can send people home with smiling faces, I feel like I've done my job," Escamilla added.

You have until around February to take advantage of those large stripers, the experts said.
