SHERMAN, Texas -- After two years, there is progress to report concerning Sherman's new Pecan Grove West Sports Complex.

There have been other projects that had to be finished before construction can begin. But now that the new Canyon Creek Drive is ready, the City Council voted Monday to finalize the contract for the 26-acre facility.

After the first phase is complete, it will offer softball, baseball and soccer fields. Construction should start in the next couple of weeks.

Sherman city spokesman Nate Strauch said the new Pecan Grove park is a necessity, especially for the city's sports community.

"We know that our current facilities -- especially when it comes to soccer -- are already stretched incredibly thin," he said.

Phase one of the project will cost just under $4 million, and should be finished spring of 2020.

There are plans Phase two, with an estimated price tag of more than $2 million. It would feature a splash pad and basketball courts. That part hasn't been funded yet, so there's no concrete timeline.
