DENISON, Texas -- A unique holiday for local businesses was celebrated on Main Street Saturday, designed to pull in holiday consumers who focus their shopping on big box retailers.

"Small Business Saturday started years ago as kind of a counterpart to Black Friday for small businesses and its really developed into its own holiday, " said Kathy Pryor, Owner of Vintage Mercantile.

A unique holiday for local businesses is celebrated the Saturday after Black Friday every year and it's designed to pull in holiday consumers who primarily focus on big box retailers.

"It kind of makes people more aware that there are other options for your retail needs than just going to the big boxes and supporting them," said Pryor.

Several businesses on Main Street opened their doors for Denison's 'Shop Small Saturday' giving customers the opportunity to shop casually and avoid the hassle of fighting Black Friday crowds.

"It's just different and it's more relaxed," said Shelley Parker, who came from out of town to shop. "You don't have to deal with the crowds, because that's overwhelming," she added.

Big retail stores might have the attention during the holidays, but small businesses say they have a lot to offer.

"We sell one-of-a-kind items," said Pryor. "Everything from antiques and vintage items for people that specifically want to find just the right present for the right person," she said.

Down the street from Vintage Mercantile, Main Street Mall has more than 70 vendors offering everything from furniture to collectable items.

"At Main Street Mall, we've got it all," said CJ Davis, Owner of Main Street Mall. "If you're looking to buy a gift or decorate your home or even a collectable item, you can find it here at the mall," she added.

Main Street has more than 20 local businesses to shop from. Small Business Saturday was hosted from 10 a.m until 4 p.m.
