SHERMAN, Texas -- What started as a toy car hobby for Carl Brown turned into a lifelong passion, one that's connected people young and old.

From fast cars to small cars to big cars, Brown's got them all (and everything in-between).

"I didn't mean for it to get this big... it just happened," he said.

Brown is a die-cast collector, adding toy cars and just about anything with wheels to his Sherman "garage."

"It really wasn't a driving passion except when I was a kid, I enjoyed playing with cars," he explained. "It reminds of you of good times, a simpler time, a time with no worries."

He pointed out some of the first cars he collected as a child.

"You can tell by the ones that are missing paint that I played with those more than others," Brown said.

This collection has building now for more than 45 years to collect. Carl Brown is now the proud owner of about 25,000 tiny vehicles. He had to build a custom "toy room" behind the family home just to fit them all in one place after encouragement from his wife, Anita.

"He had them in the house, and I said, 'It looks like a toy store,' so I said, 'You got to get them out.'"

The collection currently spans three rooms.

"From that point, you just start adding a couple of thousand a year every year, and this is what it's amassed to," Carl said.

Every nook and cranny is categorized with a specific type of vehicle.

"Each one has a good story... not that we have time to do that!" he said.

You don't have to be a car fanatic to recognize some of them. Brown pointed out a section of cars that have appeared in either a TV show or a movie.

"My favorite one is the original Shelby Cobra, which was the one made by Carroll Shelby," he said. That affection earned him the nickname "Cobra Carl."

But look beyond the rubber and metal, and these cars offer a link to the past... and Brown's present.

"It's not all about me and me being in this hobby and enjoying it from that perspective," he said. "It's really more about time and family and connecting those ties together."

Carl Brown added that he hopes to pass down his collection to his grandchildren after he's gone, and he hopes they'll keep adding cars for years to come.
