VFW gives back to Grayson County for Thanksgiving
SHERMAN, Texas -- As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, some organizations in Grayson County are giving back by providing home cooked meals.
"The best part about this, for me, is being able to see the smiles and the gratitude that people still care about each other," said Amy Higginbotham, Vice of the Axillary.
Higginbotham knows what it's like first hand to receive the love and support of her community, but what she says she's most thankful for this Thanksgiving Holiday is being able to celebrate with her family.
"I came from a military family," she said. " We didn't always get to celebrate holidays together, so to be able to have a community and a family here at the VFW is just undeniably wonderful."
As part of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars mission statement, the VFW donates their time and building annually so people like Higginbotham can give back to Grayson County.
"We are able to do this because we've got this great hall," said Monique Cooksey, a trustee for the VFW. "We're able to accommodate as many people as we can in the community," she said.
This year, volunteers with the organization provided more than four-hundred families with the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving by serving home cooked meats, side dishes and desserts- free of charge.
"Everyone gets a chance to be a part of the community," said Higginbotham. "Everyone gets fed and it's a sense of family," she added.
Although most of the volunteers took time away from their families to feed others, many of them say they were reminded what Thanksgiving is all about.
"We've all come together and we're able to give back," said Cooksey.
