ADA, Okla. -- The Pontotoc Animal Welfare Society shelter in Ada has been at capacity for months, and hasn't been able to accept any new pets.

Ada resident Barbara Austen recognized the problem and hopes she has come up with a solution.

"The name of our event is 'A Home for the Holidays and Forever' for this coming Christmas season," she said. "Everybody wants a new pet for Christmas, and what a way to get one from P.A.W.S. that's already spayed or neutered."

Ada police and firefighters have also stepped in to help the effort this Saturday. Police will be bringing their K-9 officer Luca, while the fire department will bring their dalmatian, Bull.

"The fire department and the police department are big parts of the community, and so is P.A.W.S.," Austen said. "We need to help them keep up and running."

If you can't attend the adoption drive, there are other ways you can pitch in. Austen said they've set up baskets at the police and fire stations for donated supplies.

"Blankets, shampoo, cleaning supplies -- things that they need --  office supplies," she said. "To help them out that they can keep running and keep these pets that can't get adopted."

Austen said the event will be family-friendly with something for everyone.

"We're going to have food and face-painting," she said. "You'll get to meet Bull and Luca, the dogs that are helping this event. Come out and look at the pets. If you can't adopt a pet, bring some supplies that they need."

The benefit takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the P.A.W.S. shelter at 1200 Sandy Creek Drive in Ada.  Call 580-332-5233 for more information.
