Delivery service addresses Sherman's 'food desert'

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Sherman City Council has found a temporary fix to an issue they've been discussing for months.

There have been no grocery stores on the city's southeast side since the Piggly Wiggly burned down 10 years ago. That means a longer drive for some residents just to get food.

City Council member Shawn Teamann said a new service called Instacart is now available to deliver products from local stores. After establishing an account online or via the Instacart phone app, users can arrange for groceries to be delivered to their home.

The service works for Kroger, Albertsons, Sams Club, CVS and even Petco.

"The real need isn't to get a business on that side of town; it's to actually get food to that side of town for folks that don't have other means of travel to get to the grocery," Teamann explained.

He also said the fight for a grocery store in the city's "food desert" continues. They have had a lot of interested parties, but Teamann said a project like that takes time to set up, so no timeline has been established.
