CARTER COUNTY, Okla. -- Carter County Commissioners this week approved purchasing new gear for the Springer and Woodford fire departments.

Springer's department will be getting a new airbag set, which Commissioner Jerry Alvord said was critically needed.

"They're rescue bags ... they'll pick up a load or can actually lift an item that's possibly rolled over or something like that," he explained.

Woodford's fire station needed to outfit a new employee with emergency gear.

"They hired a new man that didn't have anything that fit him," Alvord said. "He was unique in size, so they had to purchase a new set."

The commissioner said gear like that needs to be updated regularly to ensure a firefighter's safety.

"They only last X amount of time, and then they must be replaced so that they have a safety factor," he said.

These purchases come shortly after the City of Ardmore unveiled a new fire station, and Alvord said he believes supply and demand is playing a role.

"The city grows, the population grows, and probably their logistical situations to satisfy response times," he said.

Voters on Tuesday did pass a sales tax proposal to provide funding for Carter County fire departments, but Alvord said it isn't related to spending.

"The advancement for the fire department is in regards to ... funding the fire departments, not the municipal fire departments as much," he said, adding that the county could approve additional purchases for the county's fire departments in the near future.
