ARDMORE, Okla. -- Here's some good news for veterans in the Ardmore area: State Sen. Frank Simpson has announced plans to build a new veterans center.

Simpson said a new center means a much-needed upgrade for military retirees and will bring a "new and refreshing concept in long-term care."

The current facility in Ardmore was built in 1910 as the Oklahoma Confederate Home for Civil War veterans.

"We have seven centers in the state, and many of them are starting to show their age," said the Republican lawmaker who represents District 14. "A lot of those date back to the 1930s when they were originally built, and they were not built to be veteran centers."

Groundbreaking on the new Ardmore facility will likely take another two to three years, and it will be at least five years before the center is complete.
