ADA, Okla. -- After 44 years of service, Pontotoc County's Call-A-Ride transportation service is threatening to shut down if it doesn't receive additional funding soon.

District 2 County Commissioner Danny Davis said they will continue to seen more grant money to keep the on-demand service going.

"We don't have enough money to run full shifts, full days," he said. "It gets harder and harder to make this work."

The agency provides an essential service to many county residents.

"Handicap people, people going to get treatment at the hospital, lower income people getting to work and back, a lot of the college kids ride it to go to college and back," Davis added.

Call-A-Ride manager Jeff Epperly has been around the service for most of his life. He said he enjoys making an impact on the lives of his neighbors.

"It is important," he said. "My parents worked it, my grandparents worked it. I've been around it forever, and I hate to see it in this position."

The county has established a 10-member Call-A-Ride committee and now the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is involved in trying to save the transit agency. If they fail to find an answer by the November 30 deadline, Davis said they'll be forced to consider other options to keep the 11 Call-A-Ride vehicles on the road.

"We're hoping that maybe we can get with another transit system from another city to take Call-A-Ride over here and work it that way," he said.
