Fans gear up for Red River Rivalry game
GAINESVILLE, Texas -- The Red River Showdown is a game that brings nearly 100,000 fans from both teams into North Texas.
From burnt orange to crimson and cream, this weekend two types of fans dominate Texoma: horns up or horns down.
"Sooner born and Sooner bred and when we die I'll be Sooner dead," said OU fan Ric Pierson.
For Cathy and Ric Pierson being a sooner fan was nearly written in their vows.
"We met at the University of Oklahoma we graduated there in 1973 and we got married in 73 and been married ever since," said Cathy.
This weekend just doesn't breed spirit, but also the need for safety.
"It’s like an additional holiday for us, our highways are so busy right now, " said Adele Lewis with TxDot.
At the Gainesville Travel center most drivers move straight through here from Oklahoma, and TxDot officials are urging drivers to put safety first. They posted punny signs on highways to remind drivers to put away those phones, but all jokes aside officials are serious.
Because you know there's going to be a lot more law enforcement out there around that area, so plan while you can,” said Lewis.
Officials also recommend getting a designated driver if drinking, and of course come with patience.
"Know where you're going, be patient in traffic, and also get your designated driver before you go to the game and have a great time in Texas and we will see you again next year," said Lewis.
