DURANT, Okla. -- A big housing development for fast-growing Durant is one step closer to reality.

The City Council this week approved a preliminary plat for the 160-acre property on the south side of the U.S. 70 Bypass between 9th Avenue and State Highway 78 that could eventually support 230 new homes.

Hobbs Construction, the developer, said it could begin infrastructure work in about 60 days. Once the city approves a final plat, the company will bring in construction companies to build on the lots.

Durant City Planner Matthew Mahrstedt says growth makes new housing a must.

"When industry arrives to town, you gotta have a place for people to live to work at those industries, so this is helping us strike that balance," he said.

These homes would be zoned to the Calera school district, and Cemetery Road on the east side of the development will need an upgrade to handle the anticipated traffic. Durant officials said that will be in the works once this project gets underway.
