DENISON, Texas -- American Red Cross chapters across the nation are gearing up to help those affected by a very active hurricane season.

The organization's office in Denison is ready to send an emergency response vehicle and a volunteer to the East Coast as Hurricane Florence -- now classified as a powerful Category 4 storm -- takes aim at the Carolinas.

Jennifer Bedell has been with the Red Cross for 14 years. She's waiting to be dispatched as soon as Florence makes landfall, if she's needed.

The Red Cross knows it could do more if they had more volunteers. In the past, the Texoma chapter has had as many as a dozen people available to answer the call for help; now it's just Bedell.

"Go online to RedCross.org and sign up," she urged. "It tells you the different things we need, like shelter workers, case workers, staffing people, ERV drivers."

Florence is expected to make landfall on Wednesday or Thursday. That's when Bedell will most likely be called to leave.

"When they deploy us, they tell us it's either for 14 days or 21 days, so it depends on what they tell me when I go," she said. "A lot of times they'll ask you when your time is up if you can extend."
