LAMAR COUNTY, Texas -- A Lamar County woman is recovering after being mauled by dogs on Saturday morning.

The Lamar County Sheriff's Office said 74-year-old Jackie Brooks was walking along County Road 16080 south of Deport when she was attacked by Rhodesian Ridgeback, Black Mouth Cur and Leopard Hound dogs.

The victim was lying in a ditch when she signaled a passing motorist for help.

"He said at first he thought that [the dogs] were attacking a smaller dog, and as he got closer the lady waved and he saw her hand come up, trying to wave at him," Chief Deputy Jeff Springer said. "He got out and chased the dogs off, and then went and got medical help, or called for medical help."

Brooks suffered severe wounds to her legs, back and chest. She was transported to a Plano hospital and was last reported in stable but serious condition.

Family members said Brooks had just moved to Lamar County from Oregon last week.

The dogs, who lived at a nearby residence, were removed to the Paris Animal Shelter for quarantine.
