Sherman Walmart tests unique grocery pickup

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Walmart in Sherman is testing a one-of-a-kind grocery pickup program to make shopping easier.

"I'm excited at the fact that we can do something here in Sherman,Texas that no other store has done yet," said store manager George Wilthers. 

Customers now have an easier way to check off the items on their grocery list without the hassle by driving up to a kiosk on the west side of the building. 

"The kiosks are designed to be very convenient for customers,"  said Wilthers. "It's a new way of presenting goods to the customer." 

The kiosks store cold items inside a refrigerated container at 34 degrees and provide additional protection for frozen items.

"Customers can scan a QR code provided through an e-mail confirmation for their order, or they can look their order up with their phone number," Wilthers explained. 

After entering your information, the machine automatically retrieves all of your groceries and presents them through elevator doors that open up. 

But the program does have some restrictions. 

"Unfortunately, we can't do alcohol sales because of age verification," Wilthers said.  "There are also some size restrictions on some items that won't fit inside of the storage containers." 

The kiosks also limit customers to certain hours of operation.

"For right now, the kiosks are only open until 8 p.m., but we hope to eventually allow provide 24 hours a day," Wilthers said.

Walmart still has in-store pickup options for customers who like interaction with associates.
