DENISON, Texas --  For the past four years, Mel Carruth has been trying to locate the family of U.S. Army Lt. John Carl Thompson to return a shadowbox filled with his personal items.

Now he's asking for help to make that happen.

Carruth said he was at an auction in Denison when he noticed this artifact had significant ties to military history.

"Before the Air Force was the Air Force, it was the Army Air Corps and the Army Air Force," he explained. "The ring in the shadowbox is Army Air Force."

Also found in the box was an ID bracelet from World War II, which let Carruth conclude that the items are linked to Lt. Thompson.

A month after finding the artifacts, Carruth said he saw that name in an obituary.

"It was just too ironic for it not to be possibly the same person, even realizing that the name 'John Thompson' is a fairly common name," he said.

Carruth traced Thompson's daughter on Facebook and sent her a message about her father's items, but there was no reply.

Now he hopes someone will see this story and help him get an important piece of military history back to the family of an American hero.

"It would make my heart happy to know that it was returned to where it should be, that is, with the family," Carruth said.
