MADILL, Okla. -- The Madill Police Department hosted its first Community Night Out event Tuesday with activities for the entire family, including a bounce house and a concert.

But having a good time isn't the only goal; officers say they hope this event brings them closer to the community.

"It gives the opportunity for people to ask questions about the police department, find out a little bit more about the officers that are patrolling their neighborhood," said police spokesman Donny Raley.

Police departments all over the country take part in National Night Out.

"Where they can meet the community, the community can meet the police officers, and just bridge the gap between the community and the police officers," Raley said.

Madill found the inspiration to participate through its new leader, Donald Yow.

"We have a new police chief that's going to be very active in community policing, and he wants to get real involved in the community," Raley said.

The community night out at William Ray Memorial Park can go a long way for the police department. Raley said he hopes people will see officers in a different light.

"We want to be able to be a part of the community," he said. "We want the people to know that we're there not just to arrest the bad guys, but we're also there to help."

Raley said Tuesday night's event was small, but added the department may turn it up a notch next year.
