ARDMORE, Okla. -- It was like a candy store... for crooks.

"Once our officers arrived, they found that not only one car had been rummaged through, but several cars," said Ardmore police spokesman Sgt. Brice Woolly.

In fact, seven parked cars along Manor Mall Road in Ardmore were targeted by the culprit or culprits, who didn't even bother to close the doors when they were done.

Police said most of the cars had been left unlocked by their owners.

"We want you to lock your doors and keep anything valuable that they would want to take," Woolly said. "Hide it, or take it completely out of the car. Put it under the seats, under the console, put it in the trunk."

According to Woolly, while a burglar can force their way into your car, more times than not, they don't have to.

"Most burglars they don't want to make a lot of noise. They want an easy, easy way of getting into something. They don't want to be caught easily," he said.

Thieves were able to get away with a gun from one of the unlocked cars. Woolly said that's the worst thing you could leave in your vehicle.

"They could use that gun in a crime," he said. "I could see the gun owner could be held liable at some point... maybe not criminally, but civilly liable, if someone were to get hurt with that weapon."

Police urge anyone witnessing suspicious activity to call 911 immediately.
