DENISON, Texas -- Police are investigating after a retired firefighter was found dead at an apartment complex pool in Denison on Friday morning.

The incident happened at the Creekmore complex at 3800 South State Highway 91.

Police said the body of 79-year-old John Barnhill was discovered in the water by maintenance workers around 8:30 a.m.

Investigators believe his death was accidental, and may be linked to multiple health conditions.

"Usually there are multiple people at the pools and someone there to help them," said Denison police Lt. Paul Neumann. "In this case apparently there was no one with this individual at the pool."

Barnhill was a retired captain with the Denison Fire Department.
