Headed back to school? Get required shots

Posted: Updated:

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Sherman Independent School District is gearing up for the first day of classes next week.

The district is partnering with the Grayson County Health Department to make sure your kids are up to date with their vaccines.

"If they do show up and students don't have the required vaccinations, they are encouraged to go ahead and get those done immediately," district spokeswoman Kimberly Simpson said.

According to Texas state law, students attending kindergarten through 12th grades must have specific vaccinations before they can enroll in classes. That's why Sherman ISD is outlining ways to make it easier for students to get the required shots.

"If you can take them to their to your child's pediatrician, that is recommended," Simpson said. "You can also take them to the Grayson County Health Department and take care of those as well."

Next week, the Grayson County Health Department is hosting a back-to-school shot clinic. The agency says parents of kids who need vaccinations required by the state can come in for their immunizations during regular business hours.  And if you're worried about the cost, the health department has an affordable program.

"We take part in a program called Texas Vaccines for Children," said health department spokesman Josh Stevenson. "For people who qualify, we can give kids all the shots that they'll need for $20 per visit."

There are two health department vaccination clinics, in Sherman and Denison, on August 6-10. Click for information.

Sherman ISD will have nurses at every school during enrollment to let parents know about the required vaccinations.

"Our nurses are very knowledgeable, so if a parent does come and try to enroll they can get that information immediately," Simpson said.

The first day back to school for Sherman students is August 15.
