BELLS, Texas -- A man died early Wednesday after fire broke out at a home in this Grayson County community east of Sherman.

From the outside, it's hard to tell there had been a fatal incident at the brick residence in the 300 block of West McFarland Street.

The Bells Fire Department said first responders didn't see any flames when they arrived just after 4 a.m., but heavy smoke was coming from the front door framed by U.S. and Texas flags.

Firefighters pulled a man from the residence; he died later at a hospital.

"I really hate the idea that he's gone now, because he was a good man," said neighbor Kathy Atkinson. "They very seldom come out because both of them were on oxygen, but they were really sweet people."

A woman who was inside the home was able to escape before firefighters arrived. Investigators said the couple had been cooking when the stove caught fire.

No names were released.
