ARDMORE, Okla. -- The end of July means the end of Park and Recreation Month, and Ardmore's Parks and Rec Department wants to send residents into august in style.

The department is throwing its annual Recreation Celebration at the Community Water Park on Saturday. Director Teresa Ervin said it's a great way to celebrate not only local parks, but the city as a whole.

"We like to give back to the community that supports us throughout the year and tell them we appreciate it," she said. "We try to do something fun at the water park."

With Texoma's heat wave carrying into the weekend, Ervin said she and the department have taken steps to make sure people stay cool.

"Obviously, the water park is cool," she said. "We have stuff on our sidewalks that you walk on to keep it cooler, and a little sprinkler system. We also do things for our guards to keep them hydrated."

Ervin said she's aware the heat might keep people inside. But if you ask her, there's no better place to be than the water park.

"It's going to be warm, but you can jump in the pool and cool off; I think that's going to be a bonus," she said. "You can hop out of the pool, win a game a chance or a door prize, then hop right back in and cool off."

Ervin expects a fun day at the water park, but doesn't want people take any chances if the heat is too much to handle.

"Certainly if you're not feeling well, if you're not really hydrated, please stay home and rest and get better," she said.

The Ardmore Community Water Park is located at 506 3rd Avenue NE.
