SHERMAN, Texas -- Grayson County declared a state of disaster Friday morning due to the "imminent threat" of large wildfires.

County Judge Bill Magers issued the emergency proclamation so officials could take steps to mitigate the hazards posed by soaring temperatures and tinder-dry vegetation.

"The magnitude of the potential damage and the rapidity at which such a fire could escalate to major proportions constitute an imminent threat of disaster," the proclamation said.

A county-wide burn ban is now in place.

The disaster declaration will be in effect for no longer than seven days unless extended by the Commissioners Court.

There are also burn bans in effect in Fannin, Denton, Collin and Hunt counties in Texas. Only Jefferson County currently has a burn ban in KTEN's Oklahoma viewing area.
