ARDMORE, Okla. -- Langston University is bringing its nursing program to the University Center of Southern Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Board of Regents recently approved the partnership between the two schools.

Langston, based in Langston, Oklahoma, is filling the void after East Central University ended a similar partnership with UCSO.

"Langston has one of the best programs in the state," said UCSO interim president and CEO Peggy Mayor. "They were interested in coming here because they have a lot of applicants from this part of the state and North Texas."

With Langston's partnership, UCSO will be able to offer a bachelor's program for nursing students. Mayor said that's a big help for students who can't afford to go to another university.

"They didn't have a local program to go to, and because of family or other factors they couldn't go to another campus, another town, to take it," Mayor said. "So we have some people who are very glad that this is coming."

Nursing is only the first degree option Langston is offering at UCSO.

"Langston may also offer some other degree options, but they would not duplicate the degrees from Southeastern or Murray State College, who are our other partners," Mayor said.

She added that Langston will begin recruiting for its staff in the fall, and classes will begin in spring 2019.

Some Langston officials will be traveling to Ardmore this month to speak with students about how to apply for their program.
