Denison man sentenced for brutal attack on wife

Posted: Updated:

SHERMAN, Texas -- A Denison man was sentenced Monday to 60 years behind bars for stabbing his wife one year ago this week.

Sherman police responded to a call in the 900 block of South Bryant Avenue. Officers found Valisa Simmons had been stabbed at least 24 times in the neck and chest. Her throat had also been slashed.

One night earlier, investigators said Joshua Simmons had assaulted his wife, so she told him to move out.

He left, but then returned for the brutal assault.

Valisa Simmons survived the attack.

Joshua Simmons, 33, was convicted of attempt to commit murder with a deadly weapon. He will be required to serve at least 30 years of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
