ARDMORE, Okla. -- Country music fans and western film fanatics alike gathered at the Marketplace on Broadway in downtown Ardmore to take part in the second annual Cowboy Way MayFest.

It was started last year by Leslei Fisher in an effort to celebrate everything about the cowboy culture.

"That mystique, that legend, travels worldwide," she said. "So the cowboy is as much as a part of America as baseball and apple pie."

In just its two years of existence, support for the Mayfest has come from all over the country.

"Everyone is so kind and sweet and helpful," Fisher said. "I have people flying in from Brooklyn, New York, and they say, 'Where can I help? Can I sit at registration and help you for four hours?' They've paid lots of money to get here, and they still want to help."

The main attractions of the festival are the many artists and actors who attended all weekend long, including the cast of the classic western TV series "The Virginian."

Gary Clarke, who played Steve Hill on the series, said he loves to come to these events for his castmates and fans of the show.

"Being here and kind of re-gathering all of those memories is the main reason we come; it's the main reason I come," Clarke said.

And for those who didn't attend the 2018 Cowboy Way MayFest?

"You missed something big," Fisher said. "Come next year, please... you won't be sorry, I promise!"
